Search Intent: Match Pages to Buyer Expectations

Most pages that will not rank are not badly written. They are aimed at the wrong intent. The writing is fine, the keyword is right, and the page still loses, because the search engine has already decided what shape of result the searcher wants and your page is a different shape.

This is how I audit pages for intent, and how I decide whether to keep rewriting a page or stop and build something different.

What Search Intent Really Means

Search intent is the reason behind a query: what the person actually wants when they type it. The words are only a clue. A two word query such as marketing plan could mean someone wants a template, someone wants to understand the concept, or someone wants help building one, and those are three different pages.

Intent vs Keyword

A keyword tells you what was typed. Intent tells you what was meant. Ranking well requires both, but the intent decides the format, and the format decides whether the page is even eligible to compete.

Why Matching Intent Matters More Than Volume

A high volume query with mismatched intent is worse than a modest query you actually serve. You will spend months on a page that cannot win, and every month spent there is a month not spent on the pages that can.

The Four Types of Search Intent

Ahrefs puts it simply: "SEOs usually group keywords into one of four keyword search intent buckets: Informational intent, Commercial intent, Transactional intent, Navigational intent." The source describes the informational bucket as "searchers are looking for information or an answer to a specific question". Knowing which bucket a query sits in is most of the diagnosis.

Informational Intent

The searcher wants to understand something. What is it, how does it work, how do I do it. Guides, explainers and how to pages serve this. A sales page does not, no matter how well written it is.

Commercial Intent

The searcher is investigating options before buying. Best, compare, alternatives, versus. Comparison pages, reviews and service pages with real detail serve this bucket, and it is usually the most commercially valuable intent for a service business.

Transactional Intent

The searcher wants to act now. Buy, book, hire, price, quote. Product pages, booking pages and clear service pages with pricing direction and a next step serve this bucket.

Navigational Intent

The searcher is looking for a specific destination, usually a brand. There is little to win here unless they are looking for you, and chasing another company's brand terms is rarely a productive use of a small business budget.

How to Read Intent From a Live SERP

Search result pages are the best intent data available, and they are free. If you want to know what a query means, look at what is currently ranking for it.

What the Top Ten Results Tell You

Note the format of each result: guide, comparison, category page, service page, forum thread, video. Whichever format dominates is the format the search engine currently believes answers the query. If eight of ten results are guides and you are trying to rank a service page, the format has already decided against you.

Then check whether the results are from very large sites or from small ones. If small sites rank, the query is winnable with good content and a reasonable site. If every result is a major brand or a directory, the query is not a realistic target for most businesses.

SERP Features as Intent Signals

Featured snippets, People Also Ask blocks, video carousels, shopping results and AI Overviews are all intent signals. A snippet and a People Also Ask block suggest an informational query with a clear answer somewhere near the top. Shopping results suggest transactional. An AI Overview appearing above everything else tells you the query is informational and the answer can be summarised, which changes what a click is worth.

Matching Page Type to Intent

Once you know the intent, the page type follows. Most intent failures are a mismatched format, not a lack of effort.

Which Page Formats Win Which Queries

How to and what is queries are served by a well structured guide with a direct answer near the top. Best and versus queries are served by comparisons with clear criteria. Hire, cost and service queries are served by service pages that explain scope, process, cost factors and next steps. Local queries are served by location pages with genuine local detail.

When a Service Page Should Not Target a Query

If the top ten for a query is dominated by guides, do not try to rank your service page there. Either write the guide and link it to your service page, or pick a different query. On page SEO that matches intent starts with accepting what the results page is telling you rather than fighting it.

Intent and Keyword Cannibalisation

Cannibalisation is what happens when two or more of your own pages chase the same query and the same intent. It is not simply two pages mentioning the same phrase.

Spotting Two Pages Fighting One Query

The clearest sign is the ranking URL switching between two of your pages over time for the same query, with neither climbing. Another sign is two pages with near identical headings and near identical depth, both targeting the same intent from slightly different angles.

Consolidating Instead of Competing

When two pages chase one intent, merge them into the strongest version, move the useful content across, and redirect the weaker URL to the survivor. Consolidation almost always outperforms keeping both and hoping one wins.

How Intent Changes Over Time

Intent is not fixed. It shifts with seasonality, with trends, and with how a whole market starts describing a problem, and a page that matched two years ago may not match now.

Seasonal and Trend Shifts

Seasonal shifts are predictable. Tax, end of financial year, school terms and weather all move what people search and why. Trend shifts are less predictable, usually driven by a new technology or a new regulation, and they can change the dominant format for a query quite quickly.

When to Rewrite a Page vs Build a New One

Rewrite when the intent behind the query has not changed but your page no longer satisfies it, which is usually a depth or structure problem. Build a new page when the intent has genuinely changed or when you are serving a second, adjacent intent that your current page cannot carry without becoming two pages in one.

Intent in AI Generated Search Results

AI answers have made intent matching more consequential, because they concentrate on one intent type. The evidence from Ahrefs' analysis of 300,000 keywords is that "99.2% of keywords that trigger an AI Overview were 'Informational' in their intent." The same analysis found that "AI Overviews only have a 10% chance of showing for commercial and transactional keywords."

Why Informational Queries Trigger AI Answers

Informational queries have a correct, summarisable answer, which is exactly what a generative answer needs. Commercial and transactional queries are harder to summarise neutrally because the answer depends on the buyer's situation, so they are much less likely to trigger an AI Overview.

What That Means for Your Commercial Pages

It means two things. Your commercial pages are not going to be replaced by AI answers as quickly as your information pages, but your informational pages now compete with an answer that appears above the results. There is no special markup required for any of this, and Google states that the technical requirements are the same as for normal search.

The practical implication is that informational content needs to be genuinely better than a summary to earn the click, and commercial content needs to be clear enough to convert when someone arrives. The upside for smaller sites is real, because "Content requires just 13 referring domains to rank in an AIO SERP on average." That means visibility in an AI Overview result does not demand a large link profile, as the same Ahrefs study shows. How AI search changes what gets shown is worth reading alongside this, because the intent patterns and the visibility patterns reinforce each other.

Audit Your Site by Intent

An intent audit is slower than a keyword audit and far more useful. It tells you which pages are structurally incapable of ranking for their target query.

A Simple Page by Page Review

For each important page, write down the query it targets, the intent you believe sits behind that query, and the format of the page. Then search the query and look at the top ten. If the dominant format does not match your page, mark it as a mismatch.

What to Do With the Mismatches You Find

Mismatches have three fixes. Change the query the page targets to one that matches its format. Change the format of the page to match the query. Or build the missing format and link the two. Whichever you choose, make the decision deliberate and record it, rather than leaving two pages quietly competing.

An intent review is also a good moment to look at content quality, because a page that matches intent and still does not rank usually has a depth problem. If the diagnosis keeps pointing at structure rather than intent, build content around real search demand rather than adding more pages.

Common Search Intent Mistakes

Targeting volume instead of intent. A large query you cannot serve is not an opportunity, it is a distraction.

Trusting a tool's intent label over the live results. Tools infer intent from the search results, so reading the results directly is the better evidence.

Forcing one page to serve two opposite intents. Informational and transactional intents usually weaken each other, because the format that satisfies one frustrates the other.

Calling every duplicate phrase cannibalisation. Shared wording is not competition. Two pages competing for the same query and the same intent is.

Never rechecking. Intent shifts, and a page that matched the query two years ago may be aimed at something the market no longer asks for.

Turning Intent Mapping Into a Content Plan

Once the audit is done, the content plan writes itself. Group your priority queries by intent. Serve each informational cluster with one substantial guide that answers the question directly near the top. Serve commercial investigation queries with comparisons that name criteria honestly. Serve transactional queries with clear service pages that state scope, process and next step.

Then map the internal links so the informational pages carry readers towards the commercial ones, because that is the journey a real buyer takes.

Do this for one topic cluster first rather than the whole site. Pick the cluster closest to your revenue, fix the mismatches, and measure what changes before you repeat the exercise elsewhere. If you want a second set of eyes on the mapping, work with an SEO consultant on your content plan, or give me one topic and I will show you where your pages are aiming at the wrong thing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is search intent in simple terms?

Search intent is the reason behind a search query: what the person actually wants when they type it. A two word query can have several possible intents, and the results page shows you which one search engines believe is dominant.

How do I find the search intent for a keyword?

Search it and read the results. Look at what formats dominate the top ten, whether the results are guides, comparisons, category pages or product pages, and whether SERP features such as featured snippets or AI Overviews appear. The live results page is better evidence than any tool's intent label, and tools themselves typically infer intent from those results.

Can one page target more than one intent?

Sometimes, but only where the intents are genuinely adjacent. A page can often serve informational and commercial investigation intent at once, which is the classic guide that ends in a recommendation. Trying to satisfy informational and transactional intent on the same page usually weakens both, because the format that satisfies one frustrates the other.

What is the difference between intent and keyword cannibalisation?

They are related but not the same. Cannibalisation is two or more pages on your site competing for the same query and intent. It is not simply two pages mentioning the same phrase. Check whether they are chasing the same intent and whether the ranking URL switches between them over time before calling it cannibalisation.

Does search intent matter for AI search results?

Yes, and the pattern is measurable. In Ahrefs' analysis of 300,000 keywords, 99.2% of keywords that triggered an AI Overview were informational in intent, and commercial and transactional keywords had only around a 10% chance of triggering one. That means AI answers concentrate on informational queries, which changes where you should expect them to appear.

How often should I recheck search intent?

Recheck any page that is losing position or traffic, and recheck your priority topics at least twice a year. Intent shifts slowly but it does shift, and it can change with seasonality or with a broader shift in how people search for a topic.
