When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity a question about your industry, an answer appears. The question might be "who is the best plumber in Melbourne" or "which marketing consultant works with trades businesses". The answer engine writes a summary, and it usually cites the sources it used.
AI visibility is the practice of making sure your business is in that answer, and cited as the source.
It is often called generative engine optimisation, or GEO. Whatever you call it, the idea is the same. A growing share of people are getting their answers from AI tools instead of scrolling ten blue links. If you are not visible there, you are invisible to a growing part of your market.
The shift is not theoretical. OpenAI reported ChatGPT passed 800 million weekly users in late 2025 and 900 million by February 2026. Google shows AI Overviews on roughly 13 billion queries a month. That is a lot of purchase decisions being influenced by AI-generated answers.
It matters differently depending on who you are:
In every case, the pattern is the same. The AI answer happens before your website visit. If you are not in the answer, you never get the visit.
Concrete example: a business owner asks Perplexity "which Melbourne marketing consultant works with tradies". If your name is not in the answer, you are not part of the consideration set, no matter how strong your website is. The same question gets asked about agencies, accountants, plumbers, software and hundreds of other categories every day. Each answer is a gate that filters businesses out before they get a look-in.
It is worth being clear about what this is not, because the market is full of people selling magic.
AI visibility is not prompt hacking. You cannot hide keywords in invisible text or game the answer engines into mentioning you. The systems read the same content people read, and they reward the same things readers reward: clarity, specificity and credibility.
It is not a quick fix. There is no button that puts you in ChatGPT's answers. It is a discipline, like SEO, and it compounds as the fundamentals get stronger.
And it is not a replacement for good marketing. If your offer is weak or your site is broken, being mentioned by an AI tool just sends people to a bad experience. The mention is worth more when the landing is worth visiting.
There is no single trick. There are levers, and they reinforce each other.
Schema tells machines what your content means. Services, FAQs, reviews, organisation details, business hours. When an answer engine reads your page, structured data makes the entities clear. This is the same markup that helps Google, and it helps AI systems too.
An llms.txt file is a plain text file that tells AI crawlers what your site is about and which pages matter most. It is the AI-era equivalent of a sitemap, and it is one of the fastest wins available. I set it up so the machine can read the structure of your site in seconds.
Answer engines cite pages that are clear, specific and structured. That means answer-first writing, self-contained sections, real facts with sources, and comparison tables where they help. I restructure the pages that matter so they are easy to extract and worth citing.
Answer engines lean on trusted references. Wikipedia and Wikidata carry disproportionate weight, as do industry directories and consistent business listings. Building your entity means making sure the facts about your business are consistent and visible across the places AI systems read.
AI visibility is measurable, but you have to measure the right things.
We set a baseline, then track the movement month to month. The metrics improve as the fundamentals improve, and the fundamentals are good SEO and good content.
SEO optimises for search engines, ranking pages in lists of results. GEO optimises for generative engines, getting your business named and cited inside AI-generated answers. They overlap heavily. Good SEO foundations are the base that GEO builds on.
No, and nobody honestly can. Answer engines decide what to cite, and the rules change. What I can do is put every factor in your favour: structure, schema, entities, citations and content quality. Businesses with those in place get cited far more often than those without.
Faster than traditional SEO in some ways. Perplexity retrieves live content and can cite new pages within days to weeks. ChatGPT and Gemini lean more on established authority, so expect one to three months for meaningful movement and compounding after that. The fastest results come when the fundamentals, like indexing and structured data, are already in place.
No. Normal SEO is the foundation. AI systems lean heavily on the same signals Google does, including top-ten rankings, backlinks and clear content. You do both. One reinforces the other.
