How engagements work

There is no public price list on this site, and that is deliberate. Two businesses asking for the same words — SEO, or a fractional CMO — can be a small piece of work or a substantial one, depending on how many markets they sell into, what shape their site is in, and who is doing the work on their side. A number printed on a page would either scare off the smaller job or undersell the larger one.

What is fixed is how the number is arrived at, and what you get for it. Three ways to work together, each scoped and quoted in writing before anything starts.

1. A strategy session

Ninety minutes, no cost, no obligation. You bring the site, the numbers you already have and the problem you want solved. I bring a read of what is actually holding the growth back — usually two or three specific things, not a list of twenty.

You leave with a written summary of what I would do first, whether or not you hire me. If the honest answer is that you do not need an agency, that is what the summary says.

2. An audit and roadmap

A fixed-scope piece of work with a fixed fee, agreed before it starts. Typically two to four weeks.

  • A technical read of the site: indexation, speed, structure, tracking integrity.
  • A search and demand picture: what your buyers actually type, what you rank for now, where the gap is.
  • A competitor read on the two or three businesses winning the searches you want.
  • A prioritised roadmap with effort, expected impact and a sequence — one page you can act on, not a 90-slide deck.

You own the roadmap. Some clients hand it to their in-house team and never speak to me again. That is a fine outcome.

3. A growth retainer

A monthly engagement where the roadmap gets executed, not just written. Scope is set by how much work is genuinely required each month, which is why the fee is quoted rather than published.

  • Technical and on-page work, shipped.
  • Content produced against real search demand, not word counts.
  • Authority building where it is defensible, not link buying.
  • Reporting tied to enquiries and revenue, not rankings alone.
  • A monthly call where the numbers are explained plainly, including the months that went badly.

4. Fractional CMO

For businesses that need senior marketing judgement without a full-time salary. An embedded arrangement — typically one to three days a month — covering strategy, hiring, agency management and the decisions that are expensive to get wrong.

  • Owning the marketing plan and the budget behind it.
  • Managing the agencies and freelancers already in place, or replacing them.
  • Sitting in on the hiring of your first marketing hire and setting them up to succeed.
  • Being the person who says no to the campaign that will not pay back.

How the number is set

Every engagement is quoted in writing, with the scope attached, before work begins. Three things are always true:

  • No lock-in. Retainers run month to month after the first three. If it is not working, you stop.
  • No surprise invoices. If the scope changes, the change is quoted and agreed first.
  • No junior handoff. The work is done or directly supervised by the person you met.
