Digital Marketing Perth: A Small Business Playbook

Perth is the market I get the most interesting questions about, because the standard east coast advice does not fit it.

The city is smaller and less crowded than Sydney or Melbourne, which is genuinely good news if you run a small business here. The demand pattern, though, is unusual. A resources driven economy pays well and pulls a large population of trades and service businesses along behind it, and a significant share of the workforce spends part of every month on a mine site rather than in a suburban office.

I have worked with Perth clients for over thirteen years from Melbourne. What follows is the playbook I would give a Perth owner: where demand actually sits, why less competition cuts both ways, the mistake of importing an east coast plan, an honest way to size a budget, a ninety day plan built for someone with no marketing team, and the numbers that tell you whether any of it worked.

What Makes the Perth Market Different

A resources driven economy and what it pays

The first thing to understand is that the Western Australian economy is not diversified in the way the eastern states are, and that concentration is visible in how local businesses get paid. The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration reports that "There were more than 136,000 on-site full-time equivalents (FTE) in the mining sector."

That is a large population of well paid workers on site rotations, and it supports an unusually deep layer of local service businesses around it. Engineering firms, fabrication shops, hire companies, safety training providers, transport operators, medical and fatigue services, cleaning and catering contractors, and the trades that maintain everything the workforce lives in. If your business sells to any of those, or to the households those wages support, you are selling into a market with more discretionary money per capita than most of the country.

Why less competition cuts both ways

Less competition means lower cost per click on the same keywords, less bidding pressure on local search, and a realistic chance of ranking for commercial terms that would be out of reach in Sydney. I have seen a Perth business move from invisible to first page on a service term in a fraction of the time the same work would take in Melbourne.

The other side of that is audience size. Fewer competitors also means fewer buyers, so volume becomes your constraint rather than price. A channel that produces three enquiries a month for one business cannot carry four local competitors at the same volume, which is worth remembering before you assume a tactic you read about will scale the same way here.

Mining, Trades and the FIFO Effect on Local Search

Service businesses supporting mine sites

Capital spending in this state is still overwhelmingly resources led, which tells you where the procurement research is happening. The same WA Government economic indicators state that "The resources sector remained the dominant driver of capital expenditure in WA contributing 69 per cent of total new capital expenditure in the State, slightly lower than recent years and well below the peak contribution of more than 80 per cent during the mining construction boom years." The same source records that "WA accounted for 62 per cent of national mining and petroleum investment, among its highest levels in the last three decades."

For a supplier, that means your buyer is a procurement or operations person researching options at a desk, often comparing three or four providers against a capability checklist. Your website is doing the shortlisting long before anyone answers a phone. Service pages, capability statements and case evidence do far more for you here than a map listing ever will.

Trades and home services across the metro area

The residential side of the market is moving quickly too, and the reason is population rather than mining. The ABS regional population release records that "Perth had the highest growth rate (2.4%), followed by Brisbane (2.1%) and Melbourne (2.0%)." New residents need new housing, and the state accounts show what that does to demand, reporting that "Construction (4.4%) was the largest contributor to growth due to increased residential construction driven by strong demand for housing in line with strong population growth."

Every one of those new homes needs a plumber, an electrician, a roofer and an air conditioning technician, and most of those jobs get booked by someone searching on a phone in the first week they move in. Growth also brings new competitors with no track record, so visibility alone is not the answer. Being visible with reviews and real evidence behind you is.

Where Perth Small Businesses Actually Win Traffic

Local search and Google Business Profile

For most Perth service businesses this is the highest return work available and it costs nothing but attention. Complete the profile properly, choose the most accurate primary category, keep hours current including public holidays, add real photographs from real jobs, and collect reviews steadily.

The reason it works so well here is the competition. In a thinner market, a well maintained profile and a handful of genuinely useful service pages can carry a suburb that would need a serious budget to compete for in the east. There is more on the mechanics in my guide to local SEO.

Google Ads for urgent and high value jobs

Ads work best in Perth in two situations: when the job is urgent, and when the job is worth a lot. An emergency callout is bought the moment someone searches, and a mining sector contract or a commercial fit out has a job value that comfortably clears a higher cost per enquiry.

What makes ads harder here than in a bigger city is the small sample size. In a market this size your campaign does not generate thousands of clicks a week, so a single bad week is statistically meaningless and a single month can look like a trend. Set your review period long enough to hold enough data, and read the numbers across quarters rather than days.

B2B content for resource sector suppliers

If your buyers are mine sites, contractors or engineering firms, content does something specific for you that nothing else does. It proves you understand the operating environment, and it gives a procurement researcher something credible to attach to an internal recommendation.

One useful technical explainer, written in the language your buyers actually use, will outperform a year of generic social posts. The test is simple: would a maintenance planner at a site find this useful, or does it read like it was written for other marketers?

The Perth Mistake: Copying an East Coast Playbook

The most common expensive mistake I see in Perth is a plan imported from Sydney or Melbourne without adjusting for market size or buyer behaviour. Three versions of it come up repeatedly.

The first is budget misallocation. An east coast plan assumes a minimum viable spend that reflects east coast click prices. Applied here, it either overspends on a small audience or spreads across too many channels to measure any of them properly. Fewer channels with more depth is usually the right shape.

The second is channel choice by fashion. A tactic that works in a market with thousands of daily searches can produce three clicks a day here, which is not enough to learn from. Match the channel to the volume you actually have, not to what worked somewhere busier.

The third is ignoring the roster. If a large share of your customers are on site for weeks at a time, your enquiry pattern will not look like a normal city pattern, and your ad schedule and response process should reflect that rather than fighting it.

What a Perth Small Business Should Spend

Perth has an advantage here, and it is worth using deliberately. Competition is thinner, so the same monthly budget buys more position than it would in a bigger market. That does not mean you should spend less, it means you should expect more from it and hold the channel to a higher standard.

Keep the structure simple. One foundation channel, usually local search and your Google Business Profile, funded by a retainer that lets one channel be done properly. One demand channel, usually ads, funded separately so you can measure cost per enquiry on its own. Two lines, reviewed together, judged against booked work.

If you are a supplier to the resources sector, treat content as a third line rather than a marketing luxury. For that audience it is doing the shortlisting work that a sales team cannot do at the scale you need.

A 90 Day Plan for a Perth Owner With No Marketing Team

The plan assumes you have a business to run and roughly two hours a week for this, which is the real constraint for most Perth owners I work with.

Weeks one to four belong to foundations and tracking. Fix your Google Business Profile completely. Make the pages that take enquiries fast and usable on a phone. Replace stock photographs with real ones. Install call tracking and form tracking and send yourself a test enquiry to confirm it registers. Spend nothing on ads yet, because without tracking you cannot tell a good result from a lucky one.

Weeks five to eight belong to your first campaign and your first content. Turn on one ads campaign for your highest margin service with a tight service area, and write one genuinely useful piece of content that answers a question your buyers keep asking. If you sell to industry, that piece is the capability page you have been meaning to write for two years.

Weeks nine to twelve belong to decisions. Compare channels on booked work, not on enquiries. Cut anything that produced leads nobody wanted, keep anything that produced work, and add one more service or location page where you have real proof to put on it. Then write the quarter down on one page so the next one starts from evidence.

Measuring Enquiries, Not Clicks

Clicks are a cost. Enquiries are a return. The only number that should drive your decisions is cost per booked job, by channel, and it is the number most Perth businesses have never calculated.

To get it you need three things recorded consistently: how many enquiries arrived, which channel each one came from, and how many turned into work. If the third one is missing, you are optimising for activity rather than revenue, and you will eventually cut the channel that was quietly paying for the rest.

It also helps to know the baseline for how unusual a working page is. Ahrefs analysed around 14 billion pages and found that "96.55% of all pages in our index get zero traffic from Google, and 1.94% get between one and ten monthly visits." Most pages do nothing. A page that produces enquiries is an asset, and it deserves to be maintained rather than left alone.

If tracking feels like overhead, do it badly but do it consistently. A spreadsheet with three columns beats a perfect dashboard you never open.

Do You Need a Perth Based Consultant

No, not for search, paid search, analytics or content. Those are all deliverable remotely and the working relationship is identical if you are ten minutes or three hours away.

A Perth base does matter in specific cases. If local networking is how you win work, if you want face to face workshops with your team, if you need someone on site to plan content around your actual operation, or if your buyers expect to meet their suppliers locally, then local presence is a genuine advantage and worth paying for.

I service Perth clients remotely and I am upfront that I am Melbourne based. Before you brief anyone, ask how they report on a channel that failed. The answer tells you more about the relationship than any proposal document.

Perth FAQ

Is digital marketing cheaper in Perth than in Sydney?

Less competition usually means lower cost per click on the same keywords, so the same budget buys more position. The constraint here is audience size rather than price, which means fewer channels with more depth generally beats spreading a budget across five tactics.

Do I need a Perth based consultant?

No for search, paid search and analytics, and no for content. In person presence matters if you want local networking, site based content work, or face to face workshops. I service Perth remotely and I am upfront that I am Melbourne based.

My customers are mine sites, not consumers. Does local search even matter?

Yes, but differently. Procurement and operations people start their research in Google, so service pages, capability statements and case evidence matter far more than a map listing. Treat your website as the document that gets you shortlisted.

Does the FIFO roster affect when I should run ads?

Yes, and it is a real Perth advantage. Scheduling your campaigns and your response process around roster cycles lets you reach buyers when they are actually in a position to act, which is a genuine edge over national competitors running a default city schedule.

How long until a Perth business gets enquiries?

Paid search can produce enquiries within weeks. Local search generally shows up over a few months. Content compounds over quarters. In a smaller market make the review period long enough to hold enough data before drawing a conclusion.

Your First Three Moves

First, pick the single service that should own your next ninety days. Highest margin, clearest buyer, most jobs you would happily do more of.

Second, fix the free things. Your Google Business Profile, your photographs, your phone number, and the load time on the pages that take enquiries.

Third, put tracking in before you spend anything, so the first dollar you commit can be judged. There are trades and services case studies worth reading first if you want to see how this plays out in practice for a business like yours.

If you want to know which service line is closest to a win in your Perth market, ask for a short review. Straight answers, no retainer pitch. You can see how I work as a digital marketing consultant in Perth and decide from there.
